Tips to Help New California Residents Register a Vehicle

cailfonia-trafficAfter moving to California, new residents should tackle their vehicle registration before taking time to unpack some of their boxes. Within 10 days of relocating, California State law requires the registration of your out-of-state vehicle. Make sure you’ve secured your vehicle safety inspection and California smog check certificate before heading down to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office, as both are necessary for out of state vehicle registrations.

If your vehicle has at least 7,500 miles clocked on the odometer, then inspections and emissions testing may be conducted at any smog test station including a regular smog check and repair center, a smog test only center, or a Gold Shield smog station. If your vehicle is new, it must be 50-State Emissions certified to be registered in California.
